BBC collaboration: Academic Advisor for two successful prime-time series The Natural History of Britain, presented by Alan Titchmarsh, and Dan Cruikshanks's What the Industrial Revolution did for us.
History of Automation and Control: a long-term research interest, currently focusing on developments in the USA and the Soviet Union in the immediate post-war period. See here for slides of an invited lecture on this topic in Nizhnii Novgorod in 2001.
Translations Project. As part of my ongoing historical research I translated a number of seminal publications in the history of telecommunications and control engineering. They can be found here.
Digital Communications Project: member of a team which prepared T305, a level 3, 60 credit-point, undergraduate course in digital communications first presented in 1999, revised and updated for 2003.
Research student projects:
I currently supervise one part-time PhD student who is researching the history of programmable logic controllers.
PhD research projects were recently completed successfully by Karen Kear and Ivan Horrocks
T102 Project: computer-mediated communication was introduced into the Technology Faculty's Foundation Course T102 Living with Technology in 1996. Over 3000 students per year used e-mail, computer conferencing, and (optionally) the WWW.
