Article on the Redways by John
Franklin - published recently in the journal "Traffic Engineering
Control"
One of our old BUG members, John Franklin, now left
the OU and Milton Keynes, has recently published an article in 'Traffic
Engineering & Control' entitled 'Two Decades of the Redway cycle
paths in Milton Keynes'. The article proposes that the Redway system
is not the most perfect scenario for demonstrating how cycle facilities
can remove the deterrents to cycling and achieve big gains in safety.
The suggestion is that they are less safe than the roads and inhibit
the skills acquistion that is essential to cycling safely and more
widely.
It can be found on the Web at ;

John, the author of "Cyclecraft' a handbook for cyclists published
by HMSO, is also presently chair of CCN (Cycle Campaign Network)
a federation of cycling groups in the UK.
Redway problem reporting contacts;
The council
does not appear to inspect the Redways, they rely on Redway users
(us) to report problems. Please report the problems you come
across, don't leave it to others.
