Academic Interests:

My background is in polymer engineering and, while at the OU, I have pursued interests primarily in materials processing and manufacturing. These days most of my efforts are aimed at creating more effective learning experiences for engineering students, rather than on specific subject expertise. I currently co-chair T885 Team Engineering, which is the compulsory project course for our MEng degree. I also chair T881 Manufacture, Materials, Design and have a minor involvement in several other courses.

I have recently given up being Director of the Engineering Programme, and am currently working with others on the implementation of some aspects of the Student Support Review, including the Award-based Services Project.

Research Interests:

My main interest at present is in the education of engineers through distance learning. This is already becoming a matter of major concern for many conventional universities and the expertise and experience of the established open and distance learning community has much to contribute to the future success of engineering education globally.

In odd moments I also try to pursue an interest in the use of lime-based mortars for the repair of old buildings. Apart from being far more suitable for older vernacular architecture, lime also appears to offer significant environmental benefits compared to hydraulic cements, for the construction of new buildings.
