Materials Engineering Inauguration Event

Materials Engineering at the OU has recently secured a partnership with TWI for a joint Foundation Degree in Materials Fabrication and Engineering, combining their training courses with courses from our undergraduate programme. In support of the research aspects of the collaboration the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust has endowed the establishment of a new Chair. On November 26th we will hold an event to launch the collaboration and showcase our work. There will be inaugural lectures from Professor Michael Fitzpatrick, Lloyd's Register Educational Trust Chair of Materials Fabrication and Engineering, and Professor John Bouchard, Professor of Materials for Energy; as well as senior figures from other industrial and University research groups.

New Transmission Electron Microscope Installed

The Inter-Faculty Electron Microscope Suite now has the new JEOL 2100 transmission electron microscope (TEM) installed and commissioned. This is a significant upgrade to the EM Suite, replacing our life expired instrument and bring new capabilities such as tomographic imaging of samples. We are also in the process of installing new sample preparation facilities which will make this a key piece of equipment for materials characterization.

See EM facilities page.

Vacancies within Materials Engineering Full-Time PhD Research Studentships

The Materials Engineering group currently has an annual intake of 5-10 full-time research students, based at the University's main campus in Milton Keynes. The studentships are normally in one of our three main research areas of materials properties, high temperature behaviour and residual stress measurement.

Specific project available at present include development of the contour method of stress measurement, properties of nuclear structural materials, and residual stresses in power plant welds.

Projects normally start in October, but we appoint flexibly depending on the availability of funding. Some projects are open to non-UK candidates.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Michael Fitzpatrick on 01908 653100 or by email: .
