Damage to car engine

Click on pictures below for full size image.

A sporty saloon car engine failed when operating and revealed this damage to one combustion chamber when the cylinder head was lifted. Notice the missing valve head.

The piston was also holed. Broken cam timing belts can cause valves to hit pistons but this damage occurs on all cylinders. This particular problem was traced to the broken valve head.

Because of the extensive damage by many impacts, evidence of fatigue on the valve head has been destroyed. The investigation will continue once the valve stem can be examined.
