Crankshaft repair

The engine rebuilders thought this cast iron car crank could be 'built up' by repair welding once it had been worn below its limit for normal regrinding.

However as shown in Fig 2, the optical micrograph through the section shows the welding produced hard sub surface martensite with cracks. These soon grew to critical lengths enabling fast fracture.
