Welcome to the Structural Integrity research webpages

The Materials Engineering group has an internationally-recognized Structural Integrity research effort. Researchers in the group work intensively on the fundamentals of residual stress measurement techniques, particularly the newer neutron and synchrotron X-ray methods, and their application to structural materials. Our expertise in developing the basic materials science of the diffraction of neutron and synchrotron X-rays and in the application of these techniques to a material's behaviour for residual stress analysis and fatigue modelling informs a wide range of industrial problems, especially in the aerospace and nuclear industries. We also have a related activity in materials characterization, particularly the high-temperature behaviour of materials such as creep, microstructural evolution and the effects of welding and weld residual stresses at elevated temperatures.

The group's particular perspective on Structural Integrity is the modelling, measurement and analysis of the residual stresses and microstructural condition of materials in order to develop predictive life and safety assessment capabilities based on validated data supported by robust systems.

The Structural Integrity group has expertise in the measurement of relevant materials properties, materials modelling, fatigue and fracture, forensic engineering, stress analysis and stress measurement, as applied to a wide range of materials, components and structures over a wide range of physical scales and temperatures.

The group is world-leading in the application of neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction for the determination of internal residual stresses. The group has state-of-the-art laboratory X-ray diffraction, incremental hole drilling, nano-indentation, servo-hydraulic and high temperature mechanical testing, and optical and electron microscopy facilities. It maintains strong collaborations with a range of industrial sectors, University partners, and national research laboratories worldwide.
