Podcasting

A podcast is made up of a selection of digital media files that form a series. These files are distributed over the Internet for playback on portable media players and computers. The method by which the podcast is received by the end user is known as Syndication. The term podcast can refer either to the series of content itself or to the method by which it is delivered to the end user; the latter is known as Podcasting.

The term Podcast is derived from the words "iPod" and "broadcast", the Apple iPod being the brand of portable media player for which the first podcasting scripts were developed. Such scripts allow podcasts to be automatically transferred to a portable device after they are downloaded.

In order to get a better idea of what a podcast is, imagine you're in a newsagents and you see a particular magazine that you really like the look of. You take a copy and read it - finding it's just the thing for you!

Now, you might easily be in a position to go back to the newsagents and pick up the latest copy of the magazine, but it could be easier if you just subscribed to the magazine! That way, the magazine will be delivered to you at your place of work, or at home so you don't miss a single copy.
Even better than that, this subscription is free and can often provide you with access to ALL the back-issues!

It's vital to remember that a podcast is a subscription - not a file, just as a magazine subscription is not a magazine.

Newsagent = Internet
Magazine = Media file
Subscription = Podcast
