Summary
"Change in Hospital Refurbishment Projects"
"Change is a significant cause of cost escalation and delay in hospital refurbishment projects. Methods and perspectives developed to study change propagation in engineering projects may be of help in limiting the effects of change during the refurbishment process. A hospital refurbishment case-study was used to investigate at how change unfolds under the varied constraints of a one-off project. From the study, specific change mechanisms were identified, which indicated that in refurbishment, constraints may be negotiated in ways not necessarily possible in engineering. A multi-layered model was developed to show how changes can be initiated, propagated or mitigated within a project, making building refurbishment change a more malleable challenge than incorporating changes to the design or processing of engineered products."
